Balancing employees' privacy with the boss's right to know

It could be difficult to manage a number of employees who have PCs at their desks. You may observe your employees. It may look like a very busy room. However, all these workers might be doing everything but not their jobs. Is spying really a viable option? Is there really no better way for employee monitoring?
In the past the choice for supervisors who wanted some control was limited. They had to install spyware. Spyware is the name for computer applications that make screenshots, copy text the user inputs into their computer, monitor traffic. Yes, you get the power. What happens is that people start having bad thoughts about you. You can lose respect of your people, because you are effectively violating their privacy.
